South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 21 (May 26, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 22, published 26th May 2021.  This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region.  Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: Blast furnaces overall in Southeast Asia were more active last week than the previous week. The biggest increases in activity however came in Vietnam
  • Flats: The meteoric rise of Vietnam’s HRC import market has ground to a halt. The market is seeing wide price gaps as buyers and sellers grapple with the downturn in China.
  • Longs:  The East Asian rebar import market has entered a lull since the Chinese steel market peaked. Market participants are on the sidelines as they watch the ongoing fall in Chinese steel futures.
  • Semis: The Chinese billet market is still sliding, dragging down Southeast Asian import offers. Chinese importers were bidding on Friday at $680-690/t cfr China, down from $700-710/t cfr the day before.
  • Raw Materials: In Vietnam, offer prices for Japanese H2 scrap are down to $510/t cfr from $530/t cfr in mid-May. No deals are heard to have taken place from Japan.
