South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 22 (June 2, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 23, published 2nd June 2021.  This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region.  Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: Although blast furnace activity across Southeast Asia was fairly steady last week, there were fluctuations at Hoa Phat’s Dung Quat plant in central Vietnam.
  • Flats: Some Vietnamese importers are interested to book Chinese hot rolled coil after the recent rebound in the Chinese domestic market. Chinese export prices are now competitive after plunging in mid-May.
  • Longs: Import markets in ASEAN for rebar and wire rod are quiet amid the heavy losses witnessed in the Chinese long products market. Most regional buyers are inactive, preferring to wait for Chinese steel prices to stabilise.
  • Semis: Southeast Asian and Chinese billet market sentiment has improved after a rebound in the Chinese steel futures and physical markets. Suppliers are hopeful the market has found support and have either suspended offers or are no longer actively looking for bids in Southeast Asia.
  • Raw Materials: Japanese scrap prices started falling last week in Vietnam after reaching peaks around two weeks ago. Offers for H2 slid below $500/t cfr Vietnam last Wednesday after reaching highs of $530/t cfr.
