Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report - August 2022 (Aug. 10, 2022)

The August issue of the Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report is 13 pages, with 32 graphs, and 15 tables.

  • Market Report:
    • Flats: Vietnam’s import market for commercial-grade hot-rolled coil fell to its lowest level since late 2020 in mid-July, hit by a sharp slump in China. However, it has rebounded in the last week of July. Buyers acceded to higher prices after Chinese steel futures picked up.
    • Longs: The Southeast Asian billet market tried to stabilize in early July, but billet prices fell quickly and demand was weak, dragged down by a sharp drop in the Chinese steel market. However, the market saw an upward movement in Chinese steel prices in the last week of July, and billet imports to Southeast Asia also moderated their decline.
    • Semis: The Chinese billet import market has weakened. In ASEAN, the market has quietened down with lack of buying interest, as the region continues battling Covid-19.
    • Raw Materials: Recent deals for scrap in Vietnam reflect the weak state of the finished steel and scrap markets. Vietnam's scrap import market has seen successive declines in prices over the past month, but demand has almost disappeared.
  • Production:  Southeast Asian hot metal output in July rebounded slightly from June, but only because of the longer month. Production remained below earlier in the year, and only higher than production in February and June 2022. The global economic slowdown and sluggish steel demand in Southeast Asia still have an negative impact on steel mills’ production.
