China has seen the mortality rate of its coronavirus epidemic drop but it has had more difficulty supporting an economic recovery in the aftermath. While activity has clearly picked up, it has not yet reached the levels steel traders had hoped for at the start of March. As global markets too are now gripped by the epidemic and the resulting lockdowns, downstream Chinese exporters and upstream iron ore prices are now also under pressure. China has been introducing supportive measure slowly to avoid overstimulating the economy, but is it enough?
