
Construction jobs in Canada slip on-month
Construction employment levels fell in Canada in February, Kallanish understands from data gathered by Statistics Canada.
According to its latest labour survey, employment levels for Canada's construction industry decreased by 0.3% month-on-month, or by 5,000 jobs, in February. This breaks a seven-month streak of gains.
Canada's overall unemployment rate was unchanged on-month at a rate of 6.6%. This compares with the November 2024 peak of 6.9%.
The largest monthly job gains came from wholesale and retail trade, the services-producing sector and finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing categories, which added 50,800, 20,600 and 15,600 positions, respectively. The largest monthly job losses were seen in professional, scientific and technical services, which shed 32,900 positions. Transportation and warehousing declined by 23,000, and the goods-producing sector was down 19,500.
