India’s DGTR recommends 12% safeguard duty following weeks of speculation
India’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) recommended a provisional 12% safeguard duty for 200 days on non-alloy and alloy flat steel products, in March 2025.
The recommendation came after several weeks of strong rumours of a duty announcement in the range of 10-15%. While the proposed 12% is lower than the 25% hoped for by some, it has been met with a positive reaction by the market, nonetheless.
All steel segments, including those directly affected—such as the flats products segment—as well as those not directly impacted by the transition, like the longs and raw materials segments – saw prices boosted following the announcement.
The DGTR is the Indian commerce ministry’s trade investigation arm.
