Tata Motors has launched India’s first-ever all-electric hatchback with promotional prices starting at INR 8.49 Lakh ($10,440), Kallanish learns from the carmaker.

Orders for the Tiago.ev model will start on 10 October, with deliveries following in January 2023. The first 10,000 customers to purchase the BEV in India will benefit from introductory prices, paying a deposit of INR 21,000.

The promotional prices vary according to specifications. The BEV will be available in two battery pack (19.2 kilowatt-hour and 24 kWh) and charging options (3.3 kilowatts AC and 7.2 kW AC). There are also different trims, which can take the promotional car price to as much as $14,489.

“Having pioneered the EV market in India, we have successfully led its growth and penetration over the last couple of years. We believe ‘now’ is the right time to fast-forward the ongoing revolution towards the future of mobility by introducing vehicles that will encourage rapid adoption of EVs,” says Tata Passenger Electric Mobility’s managing director Shailesh Chandra.

He adds the Tiago.ev model will enable a “giant leap” in the quest for safe, clean, and green mobility in India. The vehicle offers premium safety and technology features and eco-friendly footprint at a low cost of ownership, notes Chandra.

The hatchback will be available in 80 new cities across the country and comes with an 8-year or 160,000-kilometre warranty. Tata says the range for the 24-kWh battery pack under the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC) standard is of 315 km and 250 km for the 19.2-kWh battery. The carmaker doesn’t say how the Indian range estimate compares to the often used Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings.

According to Tata, the BEV can charge from 10-100% using a 7.2-kW AC home charger in 3 hours and 36 minutes, and from 10-80% in 57 minutes using a DC fast charger.
