Japanese carmaker Toyota revealed on Monday its “Beyond Zero” strategy, under which it plans to market 15 fully-electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2025, Kallanish reports.

The new BEV series known as Toyota bZ “will incorporate the desire the provide customers with value that exceeds mere zero emissions,” Toyota says. The cars will be produced through partnerships with other carmakers both in Japan and China in new BEV dedicated platforms. These include BYD, Daihatsu, Subaru and Suzuki.

The first model to be launched is the Toyota bZ4X, a BEV SUV to be manufactured in partnership with Subaru. The concept version of the model was unveiled in China at the Auto Shanghai motor show. Global sales are slated for mid-2022.

The bZ pioneer will feature regenerative energy systems such as a solar recharging system, which will recharge the battery while stationary. Toyota didn’t disclose other spec details.

The Beyond Zero approach will see Toyota increase its electrified line-up to 70 models by 2025, from 55 currently. As of the end of 2020, Toyota’s e-portfolio consisted of 45 hybrids, 4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), 4 BEVs and 2 fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

Toyota believes “eco-friendly vehicles are only meaningful if they achieve widespread use and contribute to CO2 reductions or introduce sustainable vehicles practically.” That’s why it defends its diverse portfolio to offer choices to different customers’ requirements.

The carmaker has pledged to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050.
