UK awards 21 carbon storage licences in the North Sea
The UK’s North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), formerly known as the oil and gas regulator, announced Friday that 21 carbon storage licences have been accepted by 14 companies, Kallanish reports.
The licences in depleted oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers cover 12,000 square metres and can store up to 30 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. That’s roughly 10% of the UK annual emissions.
