Grupo Simec to idle 2 Republic Steel plants
Grupo Simec is idling Republic Steel plants in Canton, Ohio, and Lackawanna, New York, and will supply US customers from the company’s more modern facility in Mexico, Kallanish understands.
The idling, characterized as indefinite, will result in the loss of 500 jobs. The company cites market conditions, high costs and daunting would-be environmental upgrades in shuttering the US facilities.
