India is on the track to achieving its installed steel production of 300 million tonnes/year by the fiscal year ending 31 March 2031 (FY31). However, to achieve the next target of producing 500m t/y of clean and green steel by FY47, the steel minister RCP Singh has called upon private steel mills for their contribution, Kallanish notes.

The steel minister has advised the mills to plan their resource availability and encouraged them to work in a forward-backwards integration manner. He also advocated focusing on achieving the government’s mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in producing and exporting speciality steel.

RCP Singh also urged the steel companies to adhere to the Prime Minister’s target of becoming carbon neutral by FY70 and increase the influx of scrap and plastic waste usage in steel making.

Senior officials from TATA, AMNS, JSW, JSPL, and JSL attended the meeting with the steel ministry on 20 April. Also present were representatives from the Indian Steel Association (ISA), All India Induction Furnace Association (AIIFA), Furnace Steel Association of India (FSA), and Alloy Steel Producers Association of India (ASPAI).
