Latin America saw crude steel production rise sequentially at the beginning of 2023, says regional steelmakers’ association Alacero. January output, however, was down on-year, Kallanish notes.
Regional crude steel production reached 5.08 million tonnes in January, up 7.3% on December’s volume of 4.74mt but down by 2.7% on-year. Of this volume, 2.66mt were produced through the blast furnace route and 2.42mt by electric arc furnaces.
