Mechel’s Chelyabinsk delivers stainless steel to space industry
Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK), part of Mechel, shipped about 50,000 tonnes of stainless steel to the space industry in 2020, Kallanish notes.
With the use of high-quality steels and alloys, the space industry builds engines for the first and second stages of rockets. These carry out the launch of spacecraft of the Vostok, Voskhod, Soyuz and Progress series, the American spacecraft Atlantis and almost all other artificial earth satellites into orbit.
