SSAB will invest $74 million to expand heat-treat capacity at it Alabama mill, Kallanish learns.

The plan involves constructing a new building with a state-of-the-art tempering furnace at SSAB’s plant in Axis, Alabama. The project includes other infrastructure improvements, according to a press release from the Sweden-based steelmaker.

“This expansion will bolster our capacity to produce high-strength steel brands such as Hardox and Strenx and will also increase SSAB Alabama’s truck shipping capacity. This investment underscores our dedication to our customers and the industry, and we are excited about the opportunities it will bring to our facility and the community,” SSAB Alabama general manager Andy Bramstedt states.

US consumers interested in purchasing SSAB’s premium steel products will be able to find more coming from Alabama, adds the head of special steel sales, Kjell Baeckman.

“This investment will not only expand our capacity for niche products, which are in high demand, but also enable us to offer a broader product range from our Alabama facility. This will enhance our offerings to customers primarily in North and South America,” Baeckman explains.

The initiative is scheduled to begin this year and is expected to be completed in 2027.
