Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report - October 2022 (Oct. 12, 2022)

The October issue of the Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report is 18 pages, with 32 graphs, and 15 tables.

Markets Report:

  • Flats - Vietnam’s import market for commercial-grade hot-rolled coil had obvious ups and downs in September. After a rapid rise led by demand improvement, prices returned to the downtrend at the end of September due to the cooling of market sentiment. Local HRC demand was basically flat, but improved exports to EU and South Korea, as well as the weaker yuan boosted bookings in September.
  • Longs - The Southeast Asian rebar import market prices rose in September, and rebar products from China returned to the Southeast Asian market later in September.
  • Semis - The Southeast Asian billet market saw weaker sentiment in early September due to weakness in the finished steel market and an uncertain economic outlook for the region and China.
  • Raw Materials - Vietnam's scrap market is expected to be oversupplied in early September. Mills in Vietnam have withdrawn the $415/t cfr bids for Japanese H2 after two Korean steel mills, Posco and Hyundai Steel, suspended their operations in Pohang after a super typhoon flooded their facilities.

Production:  Southeast Asian hot metal output in September pulled back due to reduced production days and a sharp cut in early September. Vietnamese mill Hoa Phat led the decline in production for the month, and Indonesian mills followed the same trend.
