Kallanish South East Asia Steel Report - July 2023 (July 18, 2023)

Flats: Vietnam's import market for commercial-grade hot-rolled coil has seen concentrated transactions over the past month. Buying in Vietnam's hot rolled coil market has improved on the back of Chinese tailwinds.

Longs: The Southeast Asian rebar import market held prices almost steady in June.

Semis: The Philippine billet import market held firm in June even as buying sentiment remained low. Filipino buyers have mostly taken a wait-and-see approach, while suppliers try to raise prices on the back of improving market sentiment in China.

Raw Materials: In the Kanto Tetsugen monthly export tender which opened on 9 June, Toyota Tsusho Material was awarded 15,000t of Japanese H2 grade scrap at JPY 48,167/t ($345/t) fas. This is JPY 1,994/t higher than the Association’s last tender on 10 May. The tendered cargo is believed to be destined for Bangladesh. Meanwhile, leading electric arc furnace operator Tokyo Steel cut purchase prices by JPY 500/t for all scrap grades trucked to its Utsunomiya steelworks. Its H2 buying price was now JPY 48,500/t effective 10 June. It was previously paying JPY 49,000/t during 7-9 June.
