US steel producer Nucor plans to build a greenfield $2.7 billion, 3 million short ton/year mill, Kallanish learns from a company announcement.

The mill will be built in either Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia, and construction will take two years.

The announcement comes immediately after US Steel’s announcement that it also is planning a $3 billion, 3m st/y minimill, slated to come online in 2024. Site selection for that mill is underway.

"This greenfield sheet mill complements Nucor's existing operations, allowing us to more effectively service customers in the region, and grow our core business, while creating substantial value for our shareholders,” says Nucor ceo Leon Topalian in a statement. "This mill will allow us to competitively meet the growing need that many of our customers, particularly in the automotive market, have for high quality steel with a lower carbon footprint."

The prospective mill will include downstream processing like a tandem cold mill, annealing capabilities, and at least two galvanizing lines.

"The green and digital economy is being built with steel, and Nucor, as one of the cleanest steel makers in the world, is poised to be able to meet these unique opportunities," says Topalian.
