Following weak demand in early 2020, international scrap markets and other steel raw materials have recorded steep and often volatile price growth through Q4 2020 and into early 2021. Scrap markets could tighten further with the return of China to the international market. Meanwhile resource security seems to be sparking a wave of economic nationalism as Europe, Russia and other scrap suppling regions consider or extend export restrictions or tariffs. Dr Yayan earned B.A. degrees from Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University in 1977 and Faculty of Law of the Istanbul University in 1987. Then he received his PhD degree from the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics in 1997. Dr Yayan has diplomas from University of Michigan on Economy of Development and Population; from the University of Sussex on Labor Market Information System and Japan Int. Coop. Agency on development and improvement of employment. After serving 22 years in the government from expert to Under secretary levels between 1976-1998, he was appointed as Secretary General to the Turkish Steel Producers Association in 1998. On 25 September 2017, Dr. Yayan was appointed as Under secretary to Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology. In August 2018, Yayan retired from government and returned to his position as Secretary General of Turkish Steel Producers Association.
Rajiv has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) Degree in Metallurgy from University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) and Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from XLRI Jamshedpur. He has done Advance Management Programme from CEDEP (INSEAD, France) and has completed Director Certification Program from Institute of Directors Thailand. Over the previous 31 years, he has worked in manufacturing, planning, marketing and sales of steel. In the past, he has held various positions like Business Head for Steel Tubes, Steel Wires and Wire Rod Mill at Tata Steel. Currently he is posted as President & CEO of Tata Steel (Thailand) pcl. The listed company is engaged in manufacturing long steel products at 3 manufacturing sites in Thailand with a capacity of 1.7 million tons per annum. He sits on the board of Nat Steel Holdings, Singapore. Rajiv resides with his family in Bangkok.
Koray is the Purchasing Director of Çolakoğlu Metalurji A.Ş., responsible for the purchase of raw materials and semi products. Koray graduated from Middle East Technical University with a BS degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. In 1996, he has started his career in Borusan Mannesmann Boru Fabrikaları A.Ş. as a quality control engineer and then continued in Çolakoğlu Metalurji A.Ş. by taking different responsibilities in sales, planning, marketing and purchasing within the last 20 years. Dr. Günay holds a PhD degree in Management.
Hu Hongsheng is Director of Scrap Department of Fubao Information Company, Head of Fubao Scrap Research Team and Scrap Data Product. Hu Hongsheng has been engaged in bulk commodity and scrap industry research for more than ten years.
Ian Roper joined SMM (www.metal.com) in late 2017 to drive their international expansion and help bring their deep understanding of Chinese metals markets to a wider audience. Ian is a highly regarded industry analyst, with over 17 years experience in metals, starting at CRU in London. Since 2003 Ian was based in Shanghai, China initially with Steel Business Briefing and then Macquarie, before a five year stint at Rio Tinto running their iron ore analysis. Over 2010-2017 Ian worked as a sell-side analyst with CLSA and Macquarie based in Shanghai and Singapore.
Jehuda is Commercial Director at Groupe Ecore, responsible for all deep-sea export sales of ferrous raw materials for the group. Jehuda holds an MBA degree from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Since 1987 Jehuda has been active in the global trade of ferrous scrap, first with Marc Rich/Glencore based in the USA and the UK, later setting up Hugo Neu Schnitzer Global Trade in the States, subsequently joining Midland Metals in Toronto, Canada before setting up Idoru Trading in the States. Since 2013 Jehuda moved to Geneva, Switzerland, first to join Trafigura, focused entirely on developing Groupe Ecore's export business, and finally in 2015 as Commercial Director at the group itself.
Alain has been working at Casier Recycling NV for the last 3 years. Casier Recycling is a recycling company, specialized in both non-ferrous and ferrous materials with a strong sourcing network in the industrial activities within Flanders, Belgium. After his studies (Master in Economic Sciences at Antwerp University), Alain joined the raw materials division of the Arbed Group, which later became Arcelor and ArcelorMittal. Alain was stationed in Brussels, later in Singapore where he joined the Group’s steel trading division and returned to Belgium 8 years later to join the logistics division. Alain subsequently joined an American company Tube City IMS, a provider of steel services, including scrap procurement for the Eastern European market, especially within the Czech Republic and Serbia. He later moved to Vienna, Austria to join FJ Elsner Trading as senior trader for raw materials. In 2018 Alain joined Casier Recycling in Belgium as commercial director with responsibilities on both the scrap sourcing as on the sales side.
Philip grew up in the scrap industry working as a laborer at the Luntz Iron and Steel plant next to Timken steel in Canton, Ohio. After graduating university, for 15 years Hoffman worked for both Hugo Neu Corporation and Derichebourg Recycling where he traded ferrous scrap throughout the gulf coast, mills on the Mississippi river and in bulk internationally. In 2005 he became a lawyer receiving his Juris Doctor in both maritime and international trade law from the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2008 he started Hoffman Iron and Steel trading containerized scrap from the US west coast to Asia and also supplying bulk cargos to one of Turkey’s largest steel mills. In 2015 Hoffman foresaw that Vietnam was going to rapidly expand its steel-making capacity and in 2016 Hoffman opened a trading office in Ho Chi Minh City while at the same time he personally lived at and consulted for Gunung Garuda Steel one of Indonesia’s largest steel mills. In 2020 Philip opened a scrap operation in Indonesia to service domestic steel mills and non-ferrous smelters to supplement Hoffman’s imported scrap to Indonesia. Philip continues to work with suppliers and consumers to trade scrap throughout the Pacific Rim.
Prior to joining IIMA in January 2019 John was a Director at the International Council on Mining and Metals for the past 17 years. During his time with ICMM John led the development of the Materials Stewardship concept, an integrated materials management policy that has been implemented by major mining and metals companies as well as being enshrined in national and international government policy. John was Director for Environment at the Nickel Development Institute (NiDI) from 1997 – 2002 responsible for the development of strategies and programmes to improve the environmental and market performance of the primary nickel industry. Prior to NiDI, John was Director of the European office at the International Cadmium Association. He has a PhD in earth sciences from the University of Hull and was a post-doctoral Research Associate in Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Alberto, VP Sales at the LME, has worked on various strategic initiatives for the Exchange, including the launch of new contracts, the development of its steel futures market and the launch of the Registered Intermediating Broker membership category. He joined the London Metal Exchange in December 2014 and has been a member of the LME Nickel Committee since 2015. Previously, he was working in the Transaction Services team of PwC with focus on strategy consulting and commercial due diligence for the Financial Services industry.
Hiroyuki reports on Japanese steel mills export sales and oversea business strategy. Hiroyuki started work in Japan Metal Daily (JMD) from 2005. JMD publishes around 70,000 daily papers and is the largest newspaper focused on steel and non-ferrous industry. Usually Hiroyuki works in Tokyo, but researches not only domestic companies such as NSC or JFE, but also various regions including SE Asia, East Asia, Europe, USA, Brazil, Middle East and Africa.
Tomas is the Managing Editor Asia for Kallanish and produces editorial content on the region, with a focus on China, as well as overseeing Kallanish's operations in East Asia. He is based in Shanghai, where he has lived and worked for the last six years. Tomas speaks Mandarin as well as English and Spanish. He has also spent three years in Beijing studying and working. Previously, Tomas worked at Steel Business Briefing, where he joined shortly after graduating with a masters degree in Asian politics from SOAS in London.
Burcak brings 15 years experience in covering global long products and scrap pricing. She is responsible for the Kallanish daily scrap assessment in Turkey, as well as European shredded and US domestic and export pricing . She is based in Istanbul, prior to joining Kallanish she worked in SteelOrbis as director of Research.
