Mexico has begun a dispute settlement case at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the US tariffs on steel and aluminium, says the Mexican Secretariat of Economy (SE) in a statement monitored by Kallanish.

According to the SE, the measures imposed by the US on the basis of national security Section 232 violate the WTO agreement on safeguards.

“The Mexican government confirms that its actions will continue to adhere to the international trade laws and will be proportional to the damage that Mexico unfortunately receives,” the SE says in a note.

Mexican authorities will apply reciprocal duties to the US imposition of 25% steel and 10% aluminium tariffs. Mexican duties will affect various US-origin imports, including hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil, coated flat steel and tubes.
