US construction jobs increased in a majority of metro areas between January 2017 and January 2018, but that trend may reverse if President Donald Trump’s 232 tariffs hold, according to the Associated General Contractors of America.

Construction jobs increased in 248 of 358 polled metro areas. The Riverside-San Bernadino-Ontario, California, corridor led the gains with an increase of 10,600 jobs, or 12%. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area led the losses with 6,600 jobs, down -13%, Kallanish reports.

"Boosting demand for their products is a much better way to strengthen the domestic steel and aluminum industries," says association ceo Stephen Sandherr, speaking about private contractors. "And the best way to boost demand is to finally begin making the investments needed to improve the nation's aging and over-burdened infrastructure."
