Chile's environmental body fines BHP's Escondida

Chilean environmental authority SMA has fined BHP Chile`s Minera Escondida copper mine $6.6 million for irreparable damage caused by water extraction in the Las Vegas de Tilopozo, in the Salar de Atacama region. “SMA has verified that BHP exceeded irreversibly the maximum level allowed for water extraction by more than 25 centimetres in Tilopozo since 2005,” according to the authority.
