Glossary
DC (Direct Current) is the one directional flow of electric charge. An electrochemical cell is a prime example of DC power. Direct current may flow through a conductor such as a wire, but can also flow through semiconductors, insulators, or even through a vacuum as in electron or ion beams. The electric current flows in a constant direction, distinguishing it from alternating current (AC).
A DC arc furnace makes use of one electrode to distribute energy.
Deformed bar, which is the most common form of reinforcing bar.
The process used to smooth the sharp, jagged edges of a cut piece of steel.
A low-carbon economy (LCE) is an economy which absorbs as much greenhouse gas as it emits.
A low-carbon economy (LCE), low-fossil-fuel economy (LFFE), or decarbonised economy is an economy based on low-carbon power sources that therefore has a minimal output of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere, specifically carbon dioxide. GHG emissions due to human activities are the dominant cause of observed climate change since the mid-20th century. Continued emission of greenhouse gases may cause long-lasting changes around the world, increasing the likelihood of severe, pervasive, and irreversible effects for people and ecosystems.
Decarburisation is the loss of carbon at the surface of steel. It is caused by exposure of the surface to oxidising conditions at high temperature.
This is a low carbon steel strip which has a microstructure to enable it to be extensively pressed or drawn without tearing or failure.
Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) is undertaken to a high degree of accuracy to be used as a basis for raising finance for the construction of a project. The study usually has to be approved by the Board of Directors and is based on indicated and measured mineral resources.
The tower-like structure that houses most of the drilling controls. They are usually pyramidal in shape and offer a good strength-to-weight ratio. If the derrick design does not allow it to be moved easily in one piece, special ironworkers must assemble them piece by piece, and in some cases disassemble them if they are to be moved.
Descaling is the process of removing scale from the surface of steel. This scale forms most readily when the steel is hot and blended with oxygen and iron. Common methods are to either crack the scale by use of roughened rolls and remove by a forceful water spray or to throw salt or wet sand on the steel just previous to its passage through the rolls.
The phase of petroleum operations that occurs after exploration has proven successful, and before full-scale production.
A well drilled in a proven field for the purpose of completing the desired spacing pattern of production.
A direct methanol fuel cell functions in a similar way to a PEMFC and uses the same electrolyte, but reforms methanol directly on its electrode to form hydrogen.
Direct reduced iron is a processed iron ore that is iron-rich enough to be used as a scrap substitute in electric furnace steelmaking. The impurities in the crushed iron ore are driven off through the use of massive amounts of natural gas.
Truly global, user-friendly coverage of the steel and related markets and industry that delivers the essential information quickly while delivering on most occasions just the right amount of between-the-lines comment and interpretation for a near real time news service of this kind.
