Galvanizing

Galvanizing is the word given to the process of applying a thin layer of zinc or zinc-aluminium alloy to steel thus providing corrosion resistance. The two principal coating methods are continuous galvanizing and batch (or general) galvanizing. Continuous galvanizing is used to coat flat-rolled steel (mostly cold reduced, but some hot rolled), and also wire and tube. Zinc is applied either by hot-dip coating (the steel passes through a pot of molten zinc) or electrolytic coating (deposition takes place in a series of electrolytic cells). Hot dip is the most common method as it is cheaper. 

Galvanneal

Galvanneal refers to a sheet steel product that is annealed after hot dip galvanizing with zinc. The coated steel product is given exceptional corrosion resistance due to the external zinc-iron alloy coating.

Gas Field

A field containing natural gas but no oil.

Gas Injection

The process whereby separated associated gas is pumped back into a reservoir for conservation purposes or to maintain the reservoir pressure.

Gas To Liquids

The conversion of natural gas to a liquid form so that it can be transported easily. Typically, the liquid is converted back to natural gas prior to consumption.

Gas Well

A well that primarily produces natural gas.

Gauge

The gauge of sheet steel is what determines its thickness. So, for example, a better quality steel will have a consistent gauge to prevent deformation or weak spots. 

GDL

Gas diffusion layers, typically made out of carbon paper or cloth, play a number of important roles in a fuel cell, such as structural support, reactant transport, water removal, and heat conduction.

Gigafactory

The name Gigafactory comes from the word Giga, the unit of measurement representing billions. A Gigafactory is a term coined by Tesla founder Elon Musk to describe his first high-volume plant for producing lithium-ion electric battery cells, deep in the Nevada desert.

Grade

The metal content of an ore measured in grams per tonne or as a percentage.

Graphite

Graphite is a grey crystalline allotropic form of carbon which occurs as a mineral in some rocks and can be made from coke. It is used as a solid lubricant, in pencils, and as a moderator in nuclear reactors. Graphite also often goes into batteries for electric vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries use graphite anodes because they cope well with the flow of lithium ions during charging and discharging. There are three main types of graphite: Flake, Vein, and Amorphous

Graphite electrodes

A rod made of graphite which serves to transfer the electrical energy from the power supply to the steel melt in the EAF bath.

Green ammonia

Green ammonia is produced by ‎combining green hydrogen and nitrogen (from the air). Ammonia can be utilised as a hydrogen ‎carrier, providing advantages over transporting pure hydrogen.‎

Greenfield mill

A mill that is newly built rather than rebuilding an existing mill.

Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is made by using a process called electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. If that process is powered by a renewable energy source, such as wind or solar power, then the hydrogen is referred to as being green. Green hydrogen is produced from the electrolysis of water, using renewable energy. It can be used ‎as a fuel and energy source in hard-to-decarbonise industries.
